Cosmic Culture 07/27

ICYMI it’s Leo season aka peak #brat summer. Context is everything in this week’s cosmic culture.

White Houses and Coconut Trees

We generally try to avoid politics on this cozy corner of the internet BUT Kamala is #brat. Queen of Brat culture, Charlotte Emma Aitchison aka Charli XCX, bestowed the internet’s new favorite title upon her after President Biden “unexpectedly” pulled himself out of the presidential race, endorsing his VP instead. Who are we to object? This week the internet and politics united for one massive cultural moment that no one could’ve seen coming (well, except your favorite astrologers). What happens when you cross childless cat ladies with Gen Z and a democracy hanging in the balance? Remember, you exist in the context of all you live and what came before you. In this case, memes that will far outlive the last gasps of a dying empire.

✨ Cosmic alert: President Biden stepped away from the presidential race amidst a powerful Full Moon in Capricorn at 29 degrees—the final degree of the sign that represents THE ultimate culmination. Full Moons reflect closing chapters or meaningful release points while Capricorn rules the government, institutions, politics, and systems in place. This was the second Full Moon in Capricorn this summer as part of a rare back-to-back duo of full moons in the same signs (which hasn’t happened since 2005!). The first full moon occurred just before that blunder of a presidential debate between Biden and Trump in late June, setting the stage for Biden’s departure by the second full moon on July 21.

This is Her…Now

Leo season officially began on Monday, July 22. However, real ones know that the season popped off when the Leo-est feline of them all, Jennifer Lopez, celebrated her 55th (!) birthday on July 24 with a Bridgerton-themed party in the Hamptons. In true Leo fashion, she shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, thanking fans for their continued support spanning her three-decade career (!!) while noting that she still feels “tender, fragile and sometimes frightened.” Her partner, fellow Leo Ben Affleck, was reportedly on the West Coast and notably not in attendance amidst her birthday celebrations.

✨ Cosmic alert: Bennifer has been in the news for their reported marital woes…and things are about to intensify with an impending Mercury retrograde in Virgo / Leo for most of August (with a peak cosmic inflection point by mid-month). Each birthday year corresponds to a set of themes corresponding to your age. At 55, J. Lo leaves her seventh house year (themes of relationship matters and trust) and enters an eighth house year. Intimacy, shared resources, and therapy are on the docket. Sounds like love does, in fact, cost many things.

And the Gold Goes to . . .

The Summer Olympics are back and we’re excited to resume the role we were all born to play — professional couch critics. In addition to star-studded athletes performing at the highest level, this year’s Olympics promises more spectacle, pop culture pizzazz, and no shortage of drama (Leo season and all). Cultural icon Snoop Dogg is a primetime correspondent. Comedian Leslie Jones is back with on-air and social media coverage. Call Her Daddy’s Alex Cooper will host live, interactive watch parties in Paris. Who are we even watching again? Oh, that’s right. Simone Biles, Sha'Carri Richardson, Katie Ledecky…and Céline Dion.

✨ Cosmic Alert: The Olympics committee should’ve consulted an astrologer because hosting an event of this caliber amidst Mercury retrograde (the shadow period began on July 16) is a recipe for a massive logistical nightmare. The road to the opening ceremony has been riddled with complications — arson attacks derailing train schedules, the prevalence of E. Coli bacteria in the Seine, and food problems at the Olympic Village (just to name a few). We’re hoping Mercury keeps its tricks out of Simone Biles’ bag, especially with Mercury officially stationing retrograde on August 5—the day of the balance beam and floor exercise finals. 👀
