Cosmic Culture 09/13

It’s the short ’n sweet calm before the eclipse storm. A season of change is in the air.

Be Kind and be C****

It may be the start of demure fall, but girly pop continues to dominate the zeitgeist with Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and Taylor Swift winning big at MTV’s Video Music Awards this week. The VMAs celebrated its 40th anniversary by showing love to the newest talents on the scene (including an illegal transgender alien performance, iykyk) and paying respect to...questionably curated pop icons. Can someone show us the paper trail Katy Perry’s team left behind because we refuse to accept that her 2013 Roar performance beat out Britney Spears, Madonna, Christina Aguilera, and Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott’s Like A Virgin CULTURAL APEX MOMENT for VMA’s most iconic performance award. Seriously. Are they ok? The last time Britney Spears attended the awards show was in 2016 when she received the Video Vanguard award (VMA’s highest honor celebrating outstanding contributions to music videos). Britney has since been absent, mostly preferring to dance in her living room and offering commentary from the side. Nevertheless, Brit Brit’s presence lives on at this year’s VMAs through Tate McRae, Meg The Stallion, and Sabrina Carpenter’s respective homages. Just what we like to see, women supporting women, not some propped-up industry fodder.

✨ Cosmic alert: Sabrina and Chappell winning major awards at the VMAs coincides with the arrival of a new eclipse series along the Virgo / Pisces axis. Mutable placements-Virgo, Pisces, Gemini, and Sagittarius-take note; Chappell is a Pisces Sun while Sabrina is a Pisces Moon and Rising. This week's events will figure into an ongoing narrative through February 2027 (the Pisces lunar eclipse officially takes place on September 17). For Chappell and Sabrina, the next few years seem to be unlocking new levels of fame, creativity, privacy boundaries, and mental health. To better understand your eclipse story, you'd want to refer to the period between March 2015 and February 2017 for added context.

Look At Her Now

Selena Gomez has hit billionaire status. We repeat. Selena Gomez is the latest musician to reach the exclusive billionaire club, joining Taylor Swift and Rihanna as the only other females on the list (Selena is the youngest artist to do so at the ripe old age of 32, however). Similar to Rihanna who amassed most of her fortune via her Fenty beauty line, Selena’s net worth started to grow exponentially after she founded Rare Beauty in 2019 (anyone else a fan of the soft pinch liquid blush?). Approximately 80% of her wealth has been amassed through the makeup brand with her music contributing less than 10% to her tally. Ladies: this is your reminder to NEVER allow anyone to tell you to stay in your lane or that your passion projects are just “hobbies.”

✨ Cosmic alert: Selena Gomez has Jupiter, the planet of abundance and opportunity, in her second house of money and resources. Her Jupiter also rules her creativity and investment sectors from that position, meaning that the more fun she has with her passion projects, the more opportunity and wealth she can amass. She is learning, however, when to delegate and when to take a more active role in her business (her anxiety and sense of perfectionism can take over if she's not careful). Her Jupiter is also in Virgo, which concerns mental health and beauty standards—emblematic of Rare Beauty and The Rare Impact Fund’s commitment to raising mental health awareness.

That’s Bananas

After 26 years of marriage, iconic celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe and partner Rodger Berman have announced their divorce—guess that’s a wrap on love as we know it. The duo delivered the announcement via Instagram, to the surprise of fans (particularly Millennials who grew up watching Rachel and Rodger’s relationship on The Rachel Zoe Project, which ran from 2007-2013 i.e. the formative years). However, sources close to the couple claim that the divorce was a long time coming, citing that Rachel and Rodger had been spending less time together despite their close working relationship. The two will continue to co-parent and work together in a professional capacity. First, it was Leah (Remini, that is), and now it’s Rachel Zoe. We can’t help but wonder: which long-standing couple is next on the chopping block?

✨ Cosmic Alert: Pluto, the planet of death and rebirth, is currently back in Capricorn for the last time in our lifetimes (seriously!), making these next 9 weeks ripe for headlines involving “great endings.” Capricorn is the sign of traditions, commitments, and responsibilities. Pluto has been in Capricorn since 2008—right around the time the world was introduced to Rachel and Rodger’s relationship on The Rachel Zoe Project. Now that Pluto is about to move into Aquarius for the next 20-ish years, a new chapter of individuality and belonging is unfolding across the collective, coinciding with the timing of their divorce.
