Another weekend newsy
Hello friends,
Congratulations to my fellow millennials for witnessing yet another historical event unfold in real time and getting on with your day. Also, it’s mid-July, which confirms what we all suspected: time is a flat-circle.
Moving right along: I’m trying my best to keep the screen time low and the content great, so I appreciate you taking the time to open this email because I made it just for you! Don’t worry, no more US election talk. I aim for cozy and comfortable because the world is traumatic enough, tbh.
Book lovers! I just finished up our book giveaway yesterday, and I’ll be in touch with the lucky winners this week. If you missed it, don’t forget to follow us on Instagram or TikTok so you can join in on all of the silliness we have together online.
And (!!) a very special welcome to our new subscribers, many of whom found us via Delia Cai's very excellent Deez Links. Thanks for taking her word for it - I'm thrilled you're here. If you want to peruse older newsletters, they're all here.
Alright, grab that second cup of coffee and let's get to it!
📺 Watch
My Lady Jane is a binge-watch you’ve been looking for. A romance-comedy-drama with a dash of fantasy, it’s a refreshing take on period pieces. Great costumes, an epic soundtrack, and some very sexy sexual tension on-screen. (Prime)
In The Arena is a multipart documentary thoroughly covering Serena Williams’ early life and legendary career. (ESPN+)
Fly Me to the Moon is the type of romantic dramedy you go to the theatre to enjoy, popcorn in hand. The movie stars Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum who have great chemistry as the plot follows them navigating the complications leading up to the Apollo launch in the 1960s. Sexy people? Great costumes? Space?!!? Yes please. Bonus: the score, by Daniel Pemberton, is absolutely delightful.
🎧 Listen
The latest Hard Copy playlist is ready for you. Curated by the fabulous Aidan, this playlist feels like being 3 drinks deep in your friend’s backyard at dusk. The twinkle lights just turned on, you’re lost in conversation and touching knees. You don’t know the lyrics, but the music is making your shoulders shimmy and your laughter melodic.
There’s not much sexier than sitting outside in the summer night air, sipping something cold while jazz music scores your evening. Enter Night Reign, the sweeping, honey-coated, and dreamy latest album from Arooj Aftab.
Your Weekly Breakdown is back with another gut-busting podcast episode. Comedian and actor Caitlin Howden joins me to chat about everything from Taylor Swift to the economic challenges that Greece is facing to a great reason not to swallow. You’ll feel like you’re snuggled up on the couch chatting with your (sometimes) smart friends.
📚 Read
Long Island Compromise by Taffy Brodesser-Akner: a hearty and funny read about a family after a traumatic event, an examination of the American Jewish identity, and generational trauma. Literary fiction.
Redemption Road by John Hart: a wrongly accused good cop, a troubled detective confronting her past, and a serial killer still tormenting the town. Suspenseful crime thriller.
One Perfect Couple by Ruth Ware: a couple experiencing a bit of a rut join a reality TV show on a remote island. Then, contestants start dying one by one. Fast-paced thriller.
Try the cotton-linen blend in off-white from Gap, a similar look from Banana Republic, or mix and match with the tried and true linen pants from J.Crew. Each brand has matching or complementary linen tops as well.
What Else? Great bits from our friends around the interwebs
🩸 Our favourite vag doctor Dr. Jen Gunter has written a couple of great posts with her thoughts on all of the LEAD IN TAMPONS headlines. Please do read her responses: don’t panic and reassuring info.
🐣 Allyson Felix, the most decorated woman in Olympic track and field history and the most decorated American track and field athlete in Olympic history, made sure parents competing in this year’s Summer Olympics have a comforting space to spend time with their families. The first ever nursery is all set up and ready to go for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
🚨 In why am I not surprised news, a South Korean politician is blaming women for the rising number of male suicides. Seoul City councillor Kim Ki-duck argued women’s increased participation in the workforce over the years had made it harder for men to get jobs and to find women who wanted to marry them. South Korea has one of the highest suicide rates among the world’s rich countries but also has one of the worst records on gender equality.
🎾 Serena Williams and her 16 outfits hosted the ESPYs. For me, the highlight was the Harrison Butker diss.
📷 Google x Condé Nast launched The Vogue Archive. Google's Arts & Culture division partnered with Conde Nast to digitally catalog & share 15,000 never-seen-before images, and you can search by model, photographer, colour, decade, category, fashion house, etc. Très chic.
🇫🇷 Fallout from the France election continues: Almost a week after a legislative election that produced a deadlock in Parliament, and two weeks from the start of the Paris Olympics, discord reigns and nobody can even agree on whether the vote produced a winner. The left thinks it won. The right argues that France voted for it, if the 146 seats of the far-right National Rally are included. The center, diminished, wants to bridge the divide but for now nobody is interested.
As always, I love your thoughts, feedback, and appreciate requests. You can email me anytime - your notes come straight to me.
Rest easy.
