I love Beef on Netflix

Your Weekly Breakdown

📺 Watch

If you only remember to do one thing after reading this, let it be queue up Beef on Netflix!!! I mean, everyone everywhere is raving about it, and I hope it gets all of the awards. It’s insightful, painful, entertaining, just great. Let me know in the comments what you think?!!?

Listen, I love Miss Flo (Florence Pugh) but A Good Person is…good. It’s fine! Just not, like, mind blowing? That said, it would be an insult not to include it in Your Weekly Breakdown - it’s about being in the know!! Watch it and I’m guessing you’ll enjoy it but might not rave about it or insist that everyone else watch it. I insist you watch it though so that we can talk about the tear-jerker drama and that scene where she cuts her hair off (which she did for real when filming!).

When is the last time you had a good laugh? Like choking/crying/gasping laugh? I know, it’s been a while for me too. The cure? Watch Jury Duty, from the producers of The Office. Sorry Canadians, only available in the US on Amazon FreeVee (never heard of her), but it’s high time you all get yourselves a VPN anyway…this can help with your location settings (wink).

More laughs: Kerry Washington is a star daughter who takes in her father that just got out of prison in Hulu’s UnPrisoned.

🎧 Listen

A *great* week in music.

Albums:

Planet Giza’s latest album, Ready When You Are is “musical music”, as my friend JM called it. Accurate.

Feist is out here at 47 years of age putting out her best work to date. I can’t review her new album Multitudes as well as NPR does, but goddamn it’s beautiful. I’m on my 6th lesson - Borrow Trouble, The Redwing, and Forever Before are some of the best, but each track is very special. Enjoy.

Marxist Love Disco Ensemble will have you shaking your ass while you prep your midday snack in between demoralizing Zoom calls.

Singles that deserve your ear:

One of my very favourite Canadians Charlotte Cardin dropped Confetti and it’s a great one.

Everything is Boring from The Beaches - gritty, synth-rock. I can’t wait for their next album.

Meeting the Master by Greta Van Fleet, of Highway Tune fame. You’ll remember them! It feels like original rock and roll, and they just nail it every time.

Podcasts:

Hair loss and hair thinning is (always was?) a hot topic. Huberman Lab breaks it down and goes hard after female listenership!

An abridged version of a previous episode, How To Stop Doing It All is a great segment for the moms out there. One of my fav episodes from Dr. Becky’s Good Inside pod (thanks LB!).

📚 Read

I love a good crossover artist: Susanna Hoffs is known as a singer, but she just smash “author” onto her bio in a fantastic way. Her debut novel The Bird Has Flown has the 3 things I love most: rock music, romance, and a solid redemption story.

I’ve been revisiting a ton of iconic authors and their works as part of my research for my own novel. Truman Capote’s Music for Chameleons is a collection of some of his works, all of which encompass his romantic style of writing…even when it comes to true crime.

Also awe-inspiring is the legendary Patti Smith, who put together A Book of Days, a beautiful curation of her photos and tales about life as an artist, songwriter, and poet.

💫 Indulge

Dear Toronto, congratulations on your weekend of summer-ish heat. It’s 2 degrees celsius in Vancouver right now, and I saw someone in Ontario asking about fixing their AC. Listen, y’all are famous for your false spring, so honest question: do you think it will snow at least one more time??

On that note, here are some warm weather indulge items to start thinking about!

Knix thigh-saver shorts are genius. Thin enough to not create even more heat, pop these on under your fav summer dress and nooooo chafing!

I love a plan baseball cap, and these logoless baseball cap with UV protection from Uniqlo are the best in the business. I love the idea of pairing this with a baggy white dress and sweet neutral kicks for a relaxed summer day date.

Basic bitches unite: straw tote bags are a summer staple because we say they are! Whether it’s for the farmers market or the beach…too cute, honestly. This classic option from Gap and its striped cousin are freaking cute. Price is right!

PS I got a few ‘what do I wear to X’ questions and I will happily answer them next week. Thanks for asking and trusting me to source!

🐣 Kiddos

You know I love audio entertainment for the kiddos. Have you listened to Buy Why? It’s a great podcast for kids with 30ish minute episodes that cover everything from Who Doesn’t Love Ice Cream? to How Much Does the Moon Weigh?. They do a really balanced job of fact-based episodes that are really entertaining.

Alright, as above, we’re thinking about warmer weather. I’ll roll a few options out over the next couple of weeks!

PS I love requests! Thank you for writing…send me all the love and hate at emily @ emilykey dot com

The swimsuits from Rise Little Earthing are really sweet and budget-friendly. Note they tend to be for the smaller kiddos.

Hunza G bathers are fun and unique, but they are more expensive and the fabric requires some extra attention.

Jan & Jul have great options too for our older smöl children.

Okay, I fully admit these sun hats are zero percent cute but we’ve had ours for YEARS and they are the best because they can get them wet but they aren’t crazy heavy.

Also in the ‘not cute but really great’ category are these Aqua Sphere goggles. I promise your kids don’t give a damn.
